Saining Bundles
Saining is the Scottish term for the folk-magical practice of using smoke to purify, bless, or protect. These hand tied bundles are composed of 6 herbs and botanicals, crafted to purify space and create sacred boundaries. All of the plants contained within are grown and hand harvested on my Whidbey Island property, in relationship with the spirits of the plants and the land.
The bundles contain varying amounts of Juniper, Cedar, Lavender, garden Sage, Rosemary, and Yarrow and will produce a heavily scented smoke. I often use these bundles in my practice to cleanse ritual items or to cloak an altar or other intentional space. And of course they also work well as an incense, which practically speaking has been used throughout history to mask the potentially unpleasant smells associated with death or decay. They can make a useful addition to a Home Funeral kit for people concerned about being sensitive to odors.
As always with any source of open flame: please use caution working with burning materials, as they may sputter and send off sparks which can catch other things alight.
